Only men eat crab...

Overheard at a restaurant, from a table that was belting crabs...

Father to son: You have to put your finger in and scoop it out. It's a man's job! You're eating like a girl...

My blood boiled and I really wanted to say something to the man about teaching his son these life lessons with sexist undertones. I went into a full-blown moral dilemma about whether or not I should teach him how to parent, or if it was my place to do so. I did wonder if I was being a tad too intolerant.

I didn't tell him anything though, and picked up my food and left. In retrospect, I wish I had left him a note or something, so I could get the point across, without undermining him in front of his family.

P.S. I too had crab for lunch and I did perfectly fine.

The Punisher Strikes

For a while now, I've been called Captain Planet by friends who are at the receiving end of my wrath when they litter. I've come to accept and love this term.

And now there's a new name that's being bandied about - The Punisher. Apparently, I'll am a soon-to-be recipient of a tee that says so as well.

So here are the humble beginnings of the street heroine known as The Punisher.

Observations at a Darshini

Since the beginning of May, my life has taken a turn. Late evenings which would have been typically spent as a sloth, are now reserved for exercising at Namma Crossfit. To call it addictive is an understatement. It also helps that I go with a bunch of my closest friends, each of us in varying degrees of fitness; it really is super-fun. The days that I don’t go, I feel miserable. There have been times where I have worked out at home and have had to mop the floor soon after, to ensure I don’t slip on my sweat. For anyone who has known me enough for a bit, they can tell right away that I am a lazy bum, who loves to eat and detests exercise. Well, all that’s changed in the past two months weeks! Moving on to the observations…

So after a typical workout, we hang around for a bit at Crossfit and then head to a darshini or juice shop in Koramangala 6th block. One number lime mint cooler and one plate tamilian style idli follows (for me). One day in mid-June, as per schedule, we made our way to the darshini. To add a little variety to our regular fare, we decided to have a vegetable sandwich instead of the regular darshini fare. As we stood there among multiple others, happily eating our food, in came two policemen. So this area, like any other for that matter in India, has its fair share of cops who go on rounds to collect hafta*. I naturally assumed that was exactly what they were here for.

They first walked up to the wash basin, washed their faces, proceeded to pull their large white handkerchiefs and then scrubbed the water off their faces in front of the long mirror (don’t ask what a mirror is doing at a darshini). One of them, clearly the subordinate, (the other one had all of two stars on his epaulette - new word for me too;  it means shoulder straps) approached the food counter, not the billing counter as a normal, paying customer should. He then ordered for two ragi dosas. Unfortunately, the ragi dosas were over and the cop shot a look of disgust at the man behind the counter. He went back to the other cop and reported the unfortunate news. Undeterred, they decided to have thattae idli instead. Thankfully before they could order, good sense prevailed and they decided to eat chaat.  I say good sense, only because, unbeknownst to them the darshini had run out of thatte idly too.

Two beautiful little plates of masala puri followed, and these were polished off in no time. The two once again washed their hands. The junior officer even got a glass of water for the epauletted (my own word) man. And then, as all policemen who collect hafta do, they walked out feeling mighty pleased with themselves.

Since joining Citizen Matters, my sense of what’s right and not right, seems to have become more pronounced. In the past, I would pull up friends and random strangers for littering. These days, in addition to this, I also restrain bikes trying to squeeze their way through traffic by getting on the footpath, and give moral sermons to auto drivers. Again, I deviate…

I approached the policemen and told them I that I happened to notice that they had not paid for the food. So ensued our conversation:

Me: You did not pay for what you ate.
Junior Officer(JO): Who told you?
Me: Nobody did. I was watching you.
JO: We paid before eating.
Me: No you did not. I was watching you the entire time.
JO: But we paid.
Me: How much did you pay?
JO: Forty rupees.

If this was a game show on television, and if you had been around, I swear you’d have heard ‘Paaaaaaaaaaaaaaae’, that sound that is typically played when a guest utters an incorrect answer.

What happens when you visit a place often, is that you have a fair inkling of the price of each item. And the masala puri, my friends, was priced at Rs 25 per plate. Two plates of the aforesaid masala puri, would therefore logically amount to Rs 50!

I mentioned that to the policemen and to my delight, they had the courtesy to look chagrined. The senior officer then instructed the JO to pay up, which he did. I then proceeded to give a short moral sermon. “How can you do this? What will other people think? Is this not being corrupt? What if I complain about something so silly? What will happen then? etc etc”. The police officers quickly apologised and said I was right (of course, I was right!) and said they wouldn’t do it again. They proceeded to mount their cheetah (noble steed of Bangalore policemen) and rode away into the night.

I went back to the billing counter to check if the JO had indeed paid up and was told ’yes, he did’. I then asked the manager why they had to succumbs to the cops. He said the policemen, if given a free meal every time they came in, turned a blind eye to the parking violations and the crowd that formed on the road, as a result of customers coming to their eatery. He also mentioned that if he did not give them a free snack, they wouldn’t allow the bikes to be parked there. On average, they are about 15 to 20 bikes parked there; it could mean losing 30 to 40 customers. He also commended me and said, “No one has ever questioned the cops before”.

You’d think that was that. The manager then grinned and added, “I’ll tell you something. The two policemen who came today, they were coming here for the first time. I don’t think they will ever come back”.

* hafta - Slang for the protection money collected periodically by gangsters and corrupt policemen. Called so, because the most common collection period is one week.

Happy Monday

Typically a Monday does not call for too much celebration.

The weekend is over. You're still nursing a mild hangover from the mild partying that you did Sunday night. You have to go to work for five, maybe six continuous days before the weekend comes around again. You know that you will reach at least 5 minutes late to that very important meeting that's been set up first thing in the morning. And honestly it wasn't your fault; it really was the traffic. And did I forget to mention, you're in such a tearing hurry to get out of the house that you have missed that oh so important cup of coffee, that beautiful black brew which will kick start your brain into action.

Also did you notice how I said You? So yes, this was pretty much what my Monday morning looked like for many, many months. And honestly I didn't have too much of a problem with it, because I was unstoppable and I loved my job and the people that came with it and the after-work extra curricular activities that would ensure.

I have been masquerading as a freelance writer for 6 months now. So when I was working in the corporate world, I would think that if I had free time apart from the weekend, I would do a million, million things - bake, work with animals, go to the planetarium, finish the driving lessons, travel and so on.

This doesn't really happen - not all the things that you put on your "When I'm on a break list" actually materialize. It's actually alright. You have the time and opportunity to completely unwind. Travel does happen and how; so much so that I have learnt the art of travelling light. I've been reading a lot, discovering some kickass and I mean KICKASS books along the way - The Book Thief, 1Q84, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, 84 Charing Cross - happiness and joy. I have more time for friends and family, and I do them the honour of grazing their homes with my presence more often than before. Exercising has come to the fore once again. On a mostly (un)related note, I apparently burnt 497 calories yesterday! Woo hoo!

While a lot gets done, a good number of things don't get done too. I know they eventually will, maybe some after I starting working again even. But some days you are left with the bitter taste in your mouth - and you know it reeks of the time that's been wasted. This is especially true if you have slept for most part of the day or if you have been putting away brushing your teeth till you need to get out of the house to buy instant noodles.

This morning was a little different. Actually so was the rest of the day. I would actually say today has been quite productive, very indeed and here's why.
  • I got a call from an animal magazine to write for them. The excitement is killing me. I only hope my quote for the pieces doesn't kill them.
  • I signed up for a 6 week online course on creativity on Venture Lab. My first assignment is to design the book cover for my autobiography. Will post it here once I 'design' it. Design - it makes me feel cooler than I am supposed to, more arty-farty than usual. As an aside, if someone cannot dance, you say they have 2 left feet. In that case, are they accused of having 2 left hands if they can't draw? If so, I am blessed with an excess of left limbs.
  • I also signed up for a 3 day cooking course at Secret Garden. I learned to make mayonnaise from scratch today and also got to carry home what I made in a little doggy bag. It's a little salty, but I'm sure with a little dill and a lot of potato, it will be perfect. I also believe I can make Vegetable Stock and Vinaigrette. Tomorrow I will be making pasta from scratch - the dough, rolling it, the sauces, et al. Yum! Day after is desserts - Lemon Curd and Choco Lava Cake. I would also very much like to have Choco Lava Cake NOW!
  • I now know how to spell Vinaigrette. I honestly though it was Vinegarette.
  • I have created a profile on Khan Academy to study science. So I was one of the few people from my generation who was allowed to drop Science as a subject in my 8th standard. Why I did, I can't fathom now; I constantly berate myself about it. But back then my reasoning was sound. I think. My big brother was studying Commerce and anything he did was the best thing in the world. I would have more free hours - 10 more per week than the poor Science students. The once that cinched the deal was having to study for only 1 subject, aka Commerce as opposed to 3 - Chemistry, Biology and Physics. For the past couple of years, I have felt the need to have stimulating scientific conversations thanks to the DG and his friends who are engineers. And yes, also not to feel stupid when I can't or won't be able to quote and explain what Newton's Laws of Motion are.
  • I went to the parlour for a mint pedicure and came out with Bright Orange toe nails. I think they may just glow in the dark and send a signal to my alien doppelganger on Pluto. I also really preferred it when Pluto was classified as a planet. Now it is only a dwarf planet.
  • It rained today and it felt right! I too feel as right as rain
  • I will be dog-sitting for a friend tomorrow and the day after and I can't wait for those two mutts to come home. I'm going to love them to bits. 2 concerns on this front - that they don't poop in my house (dear god, please please please please) and walking them while Humper is lurking around. Humper or Humpoo as I fondly call him is the humping street dog who loves me dearly; his tale I will reserve for another day
  • Finally my dinner was Kappa Biryani - steamed tapioca and beef fry, from the land of coconut oil and toddy and superb food. Delish it was! For dessert there was Bibinca and Badam Halwa, from other lands. Delish once again!
So yes, my Monday has been superb. And if I had to write more than a thousand words due to an unstoppable bout of verbal diarrhea, it really was something! So to the rest of YOU, hope you had a Happy Monday too.

Holy Smoke!

I love jaggery syrup. Two reasons - it tastes yum and I think it's healthier than sugar or honey. Most breakfasty items that I eat require jaggery syrup. Bella coffee, oats with mixed nuts and jaggery syrup, jaggery syrup on toast.  It's very simple to make. Put said jaggery in boiling water till it completely dissolves. Continue boiling till syrup reaches desired consistency. Right?

I had about 3 bottles of jaggery syrup that I had made around 2 weeks back. Made in a hurry, they really didn't really match up to the desired consistency. So this morning, I woke up at 8:30 am - 3 hours before my regular wake-up time. That meant I had more time on my hands than usual, and to do justice to the preciousness that is time, I decided to fix the syrup.

I pulled out the pan, poured my 3 bottles of syrup into it and placed it over low flame even before I had my breakfast. Breakfast was oats with mixed nuts and slightly diluted jaggery syrup with a cup of black coffee, and was had whilst watching the television. I sometimes let the coffee rest for a bit before I drink it. Today was one of those days. From time to time, while the coffee was resting, I'd get a whiff of it and think 'Ooooohhh, the jaggery in there smells so wonderful' and get so excited about eventually drinking the coffee. After about 20 minutes, the coffee was still not drunk and the beautiful whiff got stronger. I looked to my right to see smoke, actual smoke coming in from the hall.

Only then did I realize that the beauty whiff I was smelling was burnt jaggery. My house was filled with smoke. Smoke that reduced visibility to less than 5 feet. Really! I never saw anything like it before. I'm surprised that my neighbours didn't venture out of their house to save me from what could have been a raging fire.

So I enter the kitchen and there is my pan of what should have been lovely, golden jaggery syrup engulfed in flames. I quickly snatched the handle to douse it in water. Each step I took towards the sink was difficult as the wind blew the flame against my hand. It was as if it was seeking retribution for killing the syrup. It was bloody hot! Pan doused, I quickly turned on all the fans. My eyes were stinging, my throat burning and the fans only seemed to be spreading the smoke to every inch of the house, percolating into everything. From the balcony in the other room, I could see smoke billowing out of the hall windows. In all honesty if I had seen it from an outsiders point of view, I would have certainly alerted the fire brigade.

It took about 15 minutes for the smoke to dissipate. It's also likely that it will take another 3 days for the smell to completely disappear; it seems to have sunk deep into everything, my clothes, the furniture, even my books.

If you're wondering what happens to jaggery syrup when it burns, it becomes carbon. Black, porous and mean! Also tough as hell to scrape off the damn pan.

So yes, word of advice while making jaggery syrup. Put said jaggery in boiling water till it completely dissolves. Continue boiling till syrup reaches desired consistency. And set a timer while you're at it!

An ode to the monkey in the bar..

An ode to the monkey in the bar?

He deems it unnecessary. I will sing his praises nevertheless.

For he serves lip-smacking food and oh so many drinks..

I’m well fed and mostly plastered after a visit!

That’s all that matters.

Monkey, you make me feel like a happy monkey!

Many thanks. :D
